Takayama Jinya

Takayama Jinya is a historic magistrate office and county office from the Edo period and located in Takayama City, Gifu. It is one of the valuable cultural heritages as the only remaining “Jinya architecture.” It was originally the Takayama Domain’s residence, but after the area came under direct control of the central government, it served as the center of administration and judiciary for the Hida region for about 176 years.

Inside the building, you can check out reconstructed rooms, such as the magistrate’s office, courtroom, and prison, allowing you to experience the politics and daily life of the Edo period. The courtyard and storehouses are well-preserved, so it is a popular sightseeing spot where you can feel the serene and historical atmosphere. Located near the morning market, it is a must-visit place in Takayama.
